Anacortes, Your Natural Destination.

Our friendly Fidalgo Island community is accessible by bridges from the south and east. Anacortes, just 90 miles north of Seattle, offers unique shops and galleries, beautiful scenery, boating, kayaking, whale watching and golf. Treat yourself to delicious selections from the menus of the city's many restaurants, or sign the guest register at one of the historic community's motels or bed and breakfast establishments. Our public parks system boasts 18 parks and 2,800 acres of forest with mapped trails. You can also use Anacortes as "home base" to embark on other Northwest adventures. Take the Washington State Ferry from Anacortes to the San Juan Islands, or north to Sidney, British Columbia.

Anacortes, the Gateway to the San Juans, is blessed with an amazing array of salt and fresh water recreation areas. You can charter a cruise or captain your own boat. Either option is a ticket to a soothing adventure on the waterways of the San Juan Islands.

Whether touring or mountain biking, cyclists will find a great range of choices in bike paths and trails throughout Washington. The state is known around the world as a premier biking destination for the full spectrum of bicyclists, from the casual explorer, to world-class mountain racers.

Anacortes is like heaven for hikers. No matter where you are in the state, you're never far from a trail. You can escape the city for an afternoon and return in time for an elegant dinner, or spend days in the backcountry, far away from the sights and sounds of civilization.

There's nothing like lying out under the stars or snuggling up in a tent far away from the pressure of our daily lives. Even if you're an hour from home, camping can make it seem like a distant escape to a healthier place. In Anacortes, this experience is not only easily accessible, but the surrounding nature is the most diverse and beautiful in the country.

Grab yourself a rod, reel and cast away for some of the finest fishing in the country. Hike up those hip-waders and venture into the clear rushing streams and secluded babbling brooks. From rocky shores to alpine forests, hundreds of pristine lakes, ponds and secret fishing holes lie waiting to be discovered-the perfect test for your fly, or bottom fishing, skills.

Waters around the 48th parallel may not hold as much warmth as balmy, tropical waters, but it does include numerous spots for fascinating scuba adventure. So grab your wetsuit, check with local dive shops, and voyage beneath Washington waves. In the protected waters of the Puget Sound colorful starfish, tube worms and the world's largest species of octopus have flourished in underwater parks anchored by sunken barges, fallen dry docks and other ersatz reefs.

Golfers in Washington enjoy some of the World's most diverse and dramatic vistas as they travel the fairways and pursue their passion. Many famous course designers have been anxious to use the beautiful landscapes to create world-class courses. The terrain yields an impressive array of styles and conditions and relatively mild weather allows courses to stay open year-round. Washington State is an exotic, premier golf destination, with a reputation and line-up of top courses that grows every year.

Washington is a haven for marine mammals and countless other species of rarely-seen sea creatures. In spring, gray whales can be seen just off the coast during their annual migration to northern feeding grounds. Orca whales feed in the waters of Puget Sound, where it's possible to see whole pods from the ferry or even from land.

Our island community's museum is located at 1305 8th Street in a former Carnegie Library now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum gallery features exhibits related to the histories of Fidalgo and Guemes islands. Also maintained by museum staff is the retired U.S. Corps of Engineers sternwheel snagboat named "W.T. Preston." This vessel is open for tours at a site near the Cap Sante Marina.

With two ski areas within a couple hours drive, and more just a little further, Anacortes, Whidbey Island or Skagit County is a great place for skiers and snowboarders to live. Our ski areas recieve some of the highest annual snowfall of any in the country. In fact, during the 1998-99 season, Mt. Baker Ski Resort recieved 1,140 inches (95 feet!!) of snow - a world record!

The Anacortes School District has four elementary schools, a middle school and a high school. The district is known for it's excellence in education.

While we enjoy our small town living, it's nice to be able to hit the big city once and a while to enjoy all the art, music, sports and shopping that Seattle affords. Seattle is only a short hour and one half drive from Anacortes.
